1) My wife sat down on the couch next to me as I was flipping channels.
She asked, ‘What’s on TV?’
I said, ‘Dust.’
And then the fight started…

2) My wife and I were watching “Who Wants To Be A
Millionaire” while we
were in bed. I turned to her and said,
“Do you want to have sex?”
“No,” she answered.
I then said, “Is that your final answer?”
She didn’t even look at me this time, simply saying,
“Yes.”
So I said, “Then I’d like to phone a friend.”

And then the fight started….

3) Saturday morning I got up early to go fishing, quietly
dressed, made my lunch, and tip-toed into the garage. I
hooked up the boat to the truck and proceeded to back out
into a torrential downpour. The wind was blowing 50 mph,
so I pulled back into the garage, turned on the radio, and
discovered that the weather would be bad all day.
I went back into the house, quietly undressed, and slipped
back into bed.
I cuddled up to my wife’s back, now with a different
anticipation, and whispered, “The weather out there is
terrible.”
My loving wife of 10 years replied, “Can you believe
my stupid husband is out fishing in that?”
And then the fight started ……

4) I rear-ended a car this morning. So, there we were
alongside the road and slowly the other driver got out of
his car. You know how sometimes you just get so
stressed, and little things just seem funny?
Yeah, well I couldn’t believe it… He was a
MIDGET!!!
He stormed over to my car, looked up at me, and
shouted, “I AM NOT HAPPY!!!”
So I looked down at him and said,

“Well, then which one are you?”
And then the fight started.. …

5) My wife was hinting about what she wanted for our
upcoming anniversary.

She said, ‘I want something shiny
& sleek that goes from 0 to 200 in about 3 seconds…’
I bought her a scale.
And then the fight started…

6) When I got home last night, my wife demanded that I
take her someplace expensive…. so, I took her to a gas station.
And then the fight started…

7) After retiring, I went to the Social Security office to
apply for Social Security. The woman behind the counter asked me
for my driver’s license to verify my age. I looked in my
pockets and realized I had left my wallet at home. I told
the woman that I was very sorry, but I would have to
go home and come back later.
The woman said, ‘Unbutton your shirt’.
So I opened my shirt revealing my curly silver hair.
She said, ‘That silver hair on your chest is proof
enough for me’ and she
processed my Social Security application.
When I got home, I excitedly told my wife about my
experience at the
Social Security office.

She said, ‘You should have dropped your pants..
You might have gotten disability, too.’
And then the fight started…

My wife and I were sitting at a table at my high school
reunion, and I kept staring at a drunken lady swigging her drink as
she sat alone at a nearby table. My wife asked, ‘Do you know her?’
‘Yes,’ I sighed, ‘She’s my old girlfriend.
I understand she started drinking right after we split up
those many years ago, and I hear she hasn’t been sober since.’
‘My God!’ says my wife, ‘who would think a
person could go on celebrating
that long?’
And then the fight started…

9) I took my wife to a restaurant.
The waiter, for some reason, took my order first.
“I’ll have the strip steak, rare, please.”
He said, “Aren’t you worried about the mad
cow?”"
Nah, she can order for herself.”
And then the fight started…

10) A woman is standing nude, looking in the bedroom mirror.
She is not happy with what she sees and says to her
husband, ‘I feel horrible; I look old, fat and ugly. I really need you
to pay me a compliment.’

The husband replies, ‘Your eyesight’s damn near perfect.’
And then the fight started…..

I don’t know what it is that happens in the minds of men and women these days. You see them, they see you. Eye contact. A brief battle of whits, and the slow unraveling of emotions. You get that tingling feeling every time you seem them or someone mentions their name. Your mind is consumed with their glowing visage. Some would call it obsession. Others would call it infatuation. You way the options, as if you aren’t already smitten, and decide to make a go of it. Without permission, you begin to invest yourself, your time, your energies, and your emotions devoted to the pursuit of your addiction, your so-called love. You sense hesitation in the other person, and are reminded of the times when others may have pursued you and think of the fear that encompassed you, the fear of heart break, depression, the anxiety of explaining another failed attempt. Instead of accepting your knee jerk response to pull back, you push forward, and forge ahead. You realize the importance of making this person feel secure in the situation, and you want to ensure them that this time you’re for real. After all, their only afraid, because of the previous hurt that they’ve felt…. the many others before them that have mistaken kindness for weakness. Right? If they seem not as interested, it’s only because they haven’t realized the grand opportunity they are being presented with. I just threw my books How to Love a Black Man and Act Like a Lady and Think Like a Man away. I know these books are what most single women refer to when they want to get things right when the past did not work out the way that they wanted it to. The truth is that even following the advice in this book the results could still be the same. I have been dealing with the symptoms of the single black female and not with the issue. I have come to the conclusion that there is a certain part of me that lives in the past. Right now I would like to declare that I wish happiness and success for everyone that is in my past or will soon be… It does nothing for me as a person to live back there and become upset by my minor facebook stalking….We all do it because we haven’t deleted or “ex” from our friend list…So we begin the investigation….I will be the first to say it, I was never honest with what I wanted and now other women get to enjoy something that I was not able to speak up about. It SUCKS to see your ex-boyfriend do something for his new girlfriend that he stated that he couldn’t give you for some reason or another. The truth hurts ,but I have to demand it at all times nomatter how much it will hurt my feelings. Think back to what people argue about and why do we push people to try to explain their actions when we know the answer. While we are arguing about things like quality time, sexual habits, other women and titles….be aware that the next women will have those things. I thought I was wrong when I told myself that I was single because my “ex” couldn’t be the man that I needed him to be. Now my friends say things like: He is a loser. He didn’t deserve you. He was immature. He will miss you one day. He really did love you, but it was too late when he figured it out. They are all right…because at some moment I felt that way at some time throughout my dealings with him. I think of relationships like a business you start. You have to invest time, money and energy in the situation. You have big dreams for your business to one day be the best. One of two things happen: it grows or it fades. If it fades, do you just give up on the business market all together? Some do, they may go into an area that they don’t fear failure. Or do you try again? Who knows these days what the end relationship result will be for me, but I am still in the business of black men…

She Said It: What’s Holding You Back?

This is a response to all the previous posts about the trials and tribulations of independent, educated black women. I thought I would turn in the direction that I always do in times where I feel that women are making too many “excuses”. It is so easy to blame others for your shortcomings in life. I mean, how many years have we been blaming “the man” for our access and opportunities in our own life. Now let’s say that this independent, intelligent black woman gets a “good” black man in her life. ( You can define “good” for yourself. I don’t want you to have something else to blame later.) The relationship may still not work out, because there may be fundamentals that may still be missing in their lives; whether it is sexual satisfaction, financial stability, support or in some cases humility. When you show humility in a relationship, you allow room for growth and the antonym (0pposite) for humility is PRIDE.

Have you ever discussed something of concern to a person and they didn’t see what the fuss was all about? They have a certain level of pride about them that cannot be impacted for your show of concern for their well-being. Once you have told them and nothing has changed, let go or just accept them for who they are showing you. The bottom line of this post is to understand that we as women can blame everything around us if we can’t be with the person we want to be with, we have been single for a couple of years, we have been consistently let down by men or we have never been proposed to or married. Is my master’s degree really the reason why I am not married? I will be honest and let everyone know why I am holding back….FEAR. The only reason that I have ever let go and just fell in love, was because it was my first time. Your first love is so innocent and pure. You trust him 100% and even if you have seen heartbreak you have never felt it and it is foreign to you. Oh, but after my first heartbreak I turned to what I knew that I was good at: school. I couldn’t fail at school and work, believe me I have the accolades to prove it. The definition of fear is a distressing emotion aroused by impending danger, evil, pain, etc., whether the threat is real or imagined. I don’t think that the pain of heartbreak is ever truly healed, but many people try to mask their emotions. Watch the women that are too happy all the damn time, watch the women that try to become like men in their actions, watch the women that tell you they can have booty calls for life and watch the women that have never been truly single for more than a month. Now for the therapy of the day….Stand up, go to the nearest mirror and ask yourself, “So what’s holding you back?”

Black women and (not) black men

So I’ve been told that my last post sparked a lot of interesting debate. Good. I think it’s a debate that should continue. I did not post it to depress high achieving black women (I feel I fall into that category), but to get us to think about our choices and options when it comes to dating and marriage. With all the reasons that exist why black women can’t find/keep a black man, I’ve come to a new conclusion. Black women should seriously consider dating more than just black men. Especially if you want to be in a healthy committed relationship before your 60^th birthday.

Now calm down, I am not saying that black women should jump ship and give up on the black man. I, like the rest of you would love to come home to a black man every night. That’s part of the problem. There are LOTS of black women who want the same thing I do and not enough black men to go around (for various reasons). In my opinion, black women need to stop saying, “I want to marry a good black man” and start saying “I want to marry a good man”. I get that there are sistas who would prefer (and I use that term loosely. Prefer does not mean you get to be bitter and angry all the time, but that’s another blog) to be single than be with anyone other than a brotha. That’s fine. I just wonder why you’re really waiting. Is it because you feel that only a black man can make you truly happy, you don’t want to deal with the judgment that will undoubtedly be passed if you date outside the race, you feel an obligation to the black community because it was ingrained in you from birth that black men are the only way to go or thats just your preference?

Let me be clear. This is not a call to run out and date the first man you find that’s not black and expect it to last forever. Chances are some of the issues that existed in your previous relationships will continue to be there unless you do something about it. Dating other men may even help you realize that you do need to work on your ______ because it’s not just the brothas that have a problem with it.

What I am advocating for is this: if you are out somewhere and man approaches you and strikes up a conversation/offers to buy you a drink don’t turn him away just because he’s not black. He may be a good man who matches you spiritually, emotionally, educationally, financially, and (please Lord) physically. There are plenty of people who will say this is not a realistic option because most men regardless of race aren’t interested in black women. I call bullshit. I can almost guarantee that every black woman has been approached by a man outside her race at least once in her life. Remember all (for example) white men don’t need to find me attractive, just one. Doesn’t concern me too much what the rest of the population thinks of me as long as I light his fire.

In conclusion, ladies lets deal with our baggage, stop mugging the brothas that choose not to date black women (waste of time), focus on what makes US happy and move towards a healthy relationship with a good man.

*But if you find a good black man that treats you right and wants you and only you, hold on tight, grow together and remind the rest of us that happy black couples still exist.
